Chapter 7

Chapter 7 taught me a lot about how to cite sources and properly use sources in my writing which will help with my research paper. This chapter explained the difference between quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing. It is important to either cite the source or mention the name of the author even when summarizing. Before when I would summarize, I did not include the name of the author, but now I know it is vital to. Also, when you are changing a part of a quote to make it fit properly in your paper, you must use brackets around the changed areas. The chapter also taught me when quotes should be introduced, and should not be used without any important purpose. Also, when paraphrasing you have to write it in your own words and do not copy word for word what the author has said. Giving credit to the source used must happen in order to avoid plagiarism. This chapter gave me a lot of advice and things to think about while writing my research paper.

Chapter 7

Jamica Williams 2/28/2018                This article organized it entire chapter into two different sections. 1. How to integrate sources and 2. How to cite and document sources using two popular documentation styles (367). By integrating the sources they mean how do confirmed sources back up an authors claims. This is an important part of writing as most of the information we write about comes from someone else ideas. For example research essays and argumentative essays most likely come from someone else who put in the work to get that information first. So its important to give credit to the original author. Also this chapter talks about how to cite sources in the two most common ways MLA and APA format. MLA style writing is most commonly used in English and some humanities courses (395). APA style writing is most commonly used in behavioral and social science courses (415). To reference another persons work within an essay authors should ...

Chapter 7

Chapter 7 gave me a lot of insight on how to cite correctly, when to use quotes. paraphrase, and summarize. The examples given in the book were helpful because sometimes I still get confused on how to do in text citations. The chapter talked about when it is appropriate to paraphrase a source. It emphasized to make sure students use their own words when paraphrasing, and to still cite in either MLA or APA style. It says to paraphrase when you do not want to use a direct quote from the author, and when your audience is a lot different then the sources audience. Contrastingly, summarizing is the summary of the entire source as a whole.  Before reading this chapter, I did not realize there was such a difference between paraphrasing and summarizing. The chapter also gives examples on how to cite just when writing a rough draft, which is relevant as we begin writing the first rough draft to project 2. Overall, the chapter was informative on how and when to correctly cite. Also was infor...

Chapter 7: MK

Mary Katherine Rankey This chapter is all about how to properly cite sources. Early in school we were not not to plagiarize and how to put things in our own words. The book does a great job of deeply explaining quoting, paraphrasing, and citing. To properly cite a work one should use the authors last time and page number in parentheses after the quote or paraphrase. Paraphrasing is putting what the author said, but using your own words to explain the same idea. Paraphrasing requires citation just as direct quotes do. Citing is important when writing a paper because the audience should know where you got your information from. Citing valid sources can make your research more reputable and thus more accurate.

chapter 7

I don't have much experience with integrating my sources into my papers, so I think this is one of my weakest points in my essays. I was never really sure if I was doing it correctly because to me it felt off, but my teachers didn't take points off. I usually stuck with the same type of citation, where I would quote the source with quotations and then state the authors last name. However, in chapter 7 I learned that I could also paraphrase or summarize the source in my own words. This will make the quote less wordy, especially if it is long and is over three lines. Also, you still have to give credit to the author because it was their idea and thoughts you just reworded it. The example in the book gave the writer credit by saying, "According to Dar..". I think I will definitely use this form of bringing my sources into my paper because it flows better throughout the paper. I found this chapter very helpful for integrating sources and I plan on using many of the tips t...

Desmet, Charlotte, Van Der wiel, Alko, Brass, Marcel. (2017). "Brain regions involved in observing and trying to interpret dog behavior". PLOS one Edited by Sam Gilbert.  The research articles main purpose was to distinguish the differences between human behavior and the behavior of a dog using fMRI scans on participants who were selected in the expirement. They used dog owners and non dog owners to see if living with a pet would influence some of the behaviors a participant would do. The participant said were given three tasks to do and based on the results of the three tasks data was recorded on how they would behave based on different stimuli reactions of dogs and participants. The stimuli reactions also show the different region of the brain that the participant used and they compare it to the dog to see if they use the same region of the brain.

Ayhan, Gulen, et al. "Suicide Risk among Prisoners in French Guiana: Prevalence and Predictive                Factors." BMC Psychiatry, Vol 17, No. 1, 2017 DOI 10.1186/s12888-017-1320-4 Ayhan argues that prisoners are at risk and have ties to suicidal thoughts and actions. There was a study conducted which questioned prisoners in France about their mental health. They conducted an exam called the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) which lead to results showing that those in prison do in fact have a direct relationship with mental health issues and suicide risk. It was found that "14.3% of the inmates suffered from depression," and there were many other factors and disorders that resulted in finding a large portion of the inmates to have various risks of suicide (14% high risk, 15% moderate risk, and 42% low risk). The author's point of view is that with more testing and diagnostics (such as the MINI), the suicide risk among pri...

Ayhan, Gulen, et al. "Suicide Risk among Prisoners in French Guiana: Prevalence and Predictive Factors." BMC Psychiatry, Vol 17, No. 1, 2017 DOI 10.1186/s12888-017-1320-4 Gulen and the other authors argue, “suicide rates in prisoners are higher than the average suicide rate of the general population” (1). They test this out by comparing statistics of French Guiana prisoners of their suicide rates compared to the general population of French Guiana. The suicide risk was “lower than in mainland France, possibly reflecting the differences in the social stigma attached to incarceration because of migrant populations and the importance and trivialization of drug trafficking among detainees” (Gulen 1).
Rachel Klahm ENC2135 2/20/18 Chapter six offered good advice and a check list of questions that I can use when picking sources for my research paper. Prior to reading this chapter I knew how to check if a source was reliable or not but now I have a much clearer way to double and triple check that my sources are accurate. I did not know just how many possible sources I could find while researching. For example, I didn’t know there were so many different genres of sources such as general and specialized academic. Primary, secondary and tertiary sources offer different interpretations of pieces. Primary sources are from a firsthand point of view. They are created by people who actually experienced specific events and are sharing their story and information. Secondary sources are interpretations of primary sources. Someone must take an original piece or artifact, analyze it, then interpret it in their own way. Tertiary sources deal with interpreting various secondary...

Suicide risk amongst prisoners directly relates to mental and physical health. To better understand the risk factors, Gülen Ayhan conducted a study to examine the correlation between French Guianan inmates and the Mainland French inmates. MINI (mini international neuropsychiatric interview) is the survey that Ayhan used to conduct his study. Questions in the survey touched on past experiences, suicidal thoughts, and potential suicidal plans. Ayhan found that risk factors included depression, dysthymia, panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, childhood abuse, and sexual assault. Out of 785 registered inmates, 13-14% had medium to high risks and 42% had low risks. If all prisons use the MINI survey, Ayhan believes that suicides in...
