The objective of this study is to "evaluate the prevalence of suicidal risk and its predictive factors in the correctional population of French Guiana." This cross-sectional study occured over a years time and only evaluated the new prisoners within the studied September 2013- December 2014 time frame. The subjects went through mulitple evaluations to ultimately answer specific questions which evaluate the inmates suicadal risk. This study revealed that out of the 707 inmates evaluated, 13.2% (93) had a suicidal risk. 13 of these 93 inmante had a high risk, 14 had a moderate risk, and 39 had a low risk of suicide.

Sydney Meyer Feb.22.2018  Desmet, Charlotte, Van Der wiel, Alko, Brass, Marcel. (2017). "Brain regions involved in observing and trying to interpret dog behavior". PLOS one Edited by Sam Gilbert. The main purpose of the article is to explain the experiment done to differentiate between the active parts of a humans brain when they are trying to interpret a dogs behavior compared to when they are trying to interpret another person behavior. According to the article, " Three functional fMRI runs were presented. The three runs were always presented in the same order and consisted of the following three tasks: PASSIVE task, INTERPRETATION task, and LOCALIZER task." This shows the way they tested the brain to see the functions of the brain that were active while trying to interpret the dogs behavior. In each step they used the same video however the person being tested was provided with a new task to focus on while watching the video. Three functional fMRI ...

Megan Heller Ayhan, Gulen, et al. "Suicide Risk among Prisoners in French Guiana: Prevalence and Predictive Factors." BMC Psychiatry, Vol 17, No. 1, 2017 DOI 10.1186/s12888-017-1320-4 Prisoners are highly at risk for suicidality, therefore the evaluation of this prevalence and factors is important to understanding the overall risk of imprisonment. To understand the risk factors Gülen Ayhan, et al. conducted a study to examine the correlation between French Guianan inmates and the Mainland French  inmates and the risk factors and predictive factors. They found that risk factors included depression, dysthymia, panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, childhood abuse, and sexual assault. It was concluded that French Guiana had slightly lower suicide risk than Mainland France due to differences in social stigmatism of imprisonment. However, there was no significant difference between the two nations, overall.

Desmet C, van der Wiel A, Brass M (2017) Brain regions involved in observing and trying to interpret dog behaviour. PLoS ONE 12(9): e0182721. Desmet, van der Wiel, and Brass research the human brain regions that are involved in mentalizing animal behavior. Their goal of their work is to find out if the same brain regions that are involved in mentalizing human behaviors are the same regions “engaged when observing dog behavior” (1). The idea of this research stems from the prior extensive research of the brain correlations of mentalizing human to human interaction. The study focuses on three major questions: does the strength of brain activation vary with observations that are easy versus difficult to interpret; if there is a potential difference, is it amplified when instructed to reason with dog versus passive observation; does the human’s prior experience with dogs effect the activation pattern? In order to go about their research, the authors gathered data from 17 total partic...

Each of the 707 inmates, upon arrival were given the opportunity to see a psychiatrist and a Doctor. With the examination, they were each subject to the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI)(2). Where they were interviewed for 17 different disorders (2). The studies purpose was to shine light on...

BMC Psychiatry, Vol 17, No. 1, 2017 DOI 10.1186/s12888-017-1320-4 Ayhan Gulen speaks on factors leading up to the suicide of prisoners, in French Guiana. He finds that there is an “importance of promptly identifying and treating psychiatric disorders,” seeing as they ultimately were the most prevalent risk factors. This study gives a strong amount of statistics, such as “14.3% of the inmates suffered from depression.” Using the (MINI) Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview gave this study statistics that help in the argument of proving which factors can begin to show signs of suicide.

Mary Katherine Rankey Ayhan, Gulen, et al. "Suicide Risk among Prisoners in French Guiana: Prevalence and Predictive Factors." BMC Psychiatry, Vol 17, No. 1, 2017 DOI 10.1186/s12888-017-1320-4 Ayhan argues that France has the highest suicide rate in prisoners and works to prove this by conducting research in French Guiana. Ayhan explains that Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) is used to evaluate prisoners mental health via a short interview. The author stated that “13.2% of inmates had a suicide risk, 14% of which had a high risk” (Ayhan). Ayhan concluded with these findings that French Guiana did, in fact, have a lower suicide rate in prisoners than France did. In addition to that, the author argued that prevention of suicide in prisoners should be monitored and practiced.
