Chapter 6 of BBG is extremely helpful in regards to writing our research paper. I liked reading that the sources are actually our main starting points. They help us to make informed decisions for our paper and begin the process of generating new ideas. Also, the text was very detailed, and I found that to be beneficial. For example, the chart that explained what examples of primary, secondary, and tertiary sources is most likely something I will reference back to during the writing process. Lastly, I liked the overall point that was reiterated throughout the entire book so far. When writing our own work and evaluating other's, it is crucial to evaluate the rhetorical situation, purpose, audience, mode, and media. Of course, for the research paper, the most important aspect is validity.
Throughout chapter 1 of “The Bedford Book of Genres,” I learned that there are a variety of ways to improve one’s writing. Several writers tend to get carried away while writing that they forget who their audience is and what message they are trying to deliver. This is when one must ask themselves what their purpose of writing is, do they want to present a narrative/ tell a story, inform, or persuade. After figuring out ones purpose they must choose a genre to be able to shorten their idea and be concise. In order for this to occur one must know the basic qualities and agreed-upon rules about the genre they are composing. Once one makes those decisions they move on to the rhetorical situation which mainly explains the idea. I agree that reading sources helps find your main topic for your paper, and that this book has been very helpful throughout our writing assignments so far this semester.
