Subversion and Redemption. Rachel Klahm

1. Some subversion examples the author mentions are Max in Where the Wild Things Are and Don Quixote. Other movies that are subversions are A Haunted House and WALL-E. WALL-E is a subversion because it's a light hearted cartoon with a much deeper meaning. Humans have abused planet Earth with industrial corporations to the point where they must abandon it until robots have cleaned it up. The moral lesson is that technology and industry are bad and if we continue on the path we're on, the Earth will turn into the trash ridden world that is in WALL-E. Despite this, the film is still pro-human. Compared to the usual "humans are bad for nature" lesson, WALL-E actually shows why Earth needs humans. The movie has no real dialogue from anyone, just robot sounds and intercom voices on the ship that the humans live on. When WALL-E meets Eva they ask each other "Directive?" which basically means "What's your purpose?" Each robot in the film has a directive. WALL-E picks up and crushes trash into blocks and Eva collects natural life forms that still remain on Earth for the humans so they know when it is safe to return. The only characters with no directive in the film are the humans who are now fat, lifeless blobs who don't even walk or interact with each other and stare at a screen all day long. The film is one of my favorites because with no words it gets such a clear message across.

2. "Go the Fuck to Sleep" shows the harsh and hilarious reality that parents struggle with of putting young kids to sleep. It is a very humorous read intended to make the reader laugh. The targeted audience is definitely parents of young children and adults.

Picture Rhetoric

This ticket is advertising an upcoming event that the sorority, Delta Gamma, is holding. It is rhetorically effective because it is colorful and completely delivers the idea that there will be a variety of different desserts at the event. The candies work very closely with theme and helps students to easily look at the ticket and be able to understand what the event is. I think that the size is very effective for this advertising ticket. I also think it very well informs the public because it states the time the event will be held and the date, as well as the address.

Peaceful Protest during the Vietnam War Throughout the sixties, antiwar protests sprung up across America due to the United States' controversial involvement in the Vietnam War. The Vietnam War Protests are marked as being some of the first major anti-war protests in the States. In today's society, there are various non-violent anti-war protests around the globe. These protests have made monumental differences around the world, as put by Julia Bacha, "The [Budrus] residents, after ten months of peaceful resistance, convinced the Israeli government to move the root of the barrier off their lands and to the green line, which is internationally recognized boundary between Israel and the Palestinian territories," (1). Though some may claim that the Vietnam protests had no effect and the only reason we pulled out of the war was due to how costly it was, this protest is pivotal in setting an example for future peaceful protestors throughout history.
