The remix reading talks about several different examples of copyright situations between singers and people using their music as other forms of entertainment. In my opinion, some of these examples are crazy. The court case between Prince and the mother of the 18 month old baby was taken too far. The mother had no intentions of taking Prince's music, she simply just wanted to show her baby dancing to one of his songs because she thought it was cute and funny. The reading also compares copyright laws to other countries, and how they use music, media, and entertainment in other cultures. Another example in the reading was a girl making a project about what goes into becoming a celebrity. She had used a picture of John Lennon in her project and was later prosecuted for the use of the picture. Both copyright arguments went through court for a long time, and faced threats of having to pay several thousands in fees for using the musicians ideas. It seems like the people in each example are unaware of the copyright laws. If people were more aware, then copyright issues would be prevented, and less likely a problem. A lot of money could be saved from lawyer fees and fees from copyrighting if people were educated about the laws.
For my action plan I will add more pictures to my website and continue to expand on my topic. I also plan to make posters to place around campus to reach outside audiences and use that as my nondigital source. I will continue to work over the weekend to finish the project and best carry out my message on my website.
Educating people about copyright laws could potentially stop this issue from reoccurring. The examples from this text may seem over the top, and they were not done maliciously, but they have the chance of potentially hurting the artist monetarily when without credit given.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the owners of the Prince song took it way too far and that there was no need to sue the mother.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the Prince case was taken much too far, because the mother was not aware of what she was doing. This just shows that copyright infringement needs to be taught to people so they know what they can and can't post.
