When writing a research paper, it is extremely important to have multiple sources. This will not only give you more information about your topic, but it will make your paper more credible. In chapter 6, different types of sources were introduced such as a general source and a specialized academic source.. Whenever I had a research paper in high school, I did not really pay attention to what kind of sources I was using. I just used whatever information I could find. However, in this chapter I learned the differences between all the sources. For example general sources are written so people who are not familiar with the topic will get a good understanding. But on the other hand, there is another source that I learned about which is called a specialized academic source. This type of source is strictly written by experts who have studied a specific topic for a long time and have better knowledge on it. This kind of source it the type that I would like to use for the majority of my paper because it seems like I would get the most information out of it.
Throughout chapter 1 of “The Bedford Book of Genres,” I learned that there are a variety of ways to improve one’s writing. Several writers tend to get carried away while writing that they forget who their audience is and what message they are trying to deliver. This is when one must ask themselves what their purpose of writing is, do they want to present a narrative/ tell a story, inform, or persuade. After figuring out ones purpose they must choose a genre to be able to shorten their idea and be concise. In order for this to occur one must know the basic qualities and agreed-upon rules about the genre they are composing. Once one makes those decisions they move on to the rhetorical situation which mainly explains the idea. I relate that I just used any source I could find. I now realize that this was not the right thing to do an probably weakened by argument.
ReplyDeleteI was very similar in high school as well in the way that I chose my sources. For most of my time, I was unaware of all of the different types of sources, specifically for research papers. Now, I will use this knowledge to my advantage and utilize more academic sources.
