Shitty First Drafts Response

In Anne Lamott's, Shitty First Drafts, the sentence that stood out to me the most was that, "Very few writers really know what they are doing until they have done it." I have never related to a thought so much regarding my writing due to the fact that I am the last person with ideas shooting into their head with clear direction of where I am headed with my piece. I am the type who thinks as I go. Being that I am not the most confident with my writing, reading Lamott's selection was sort of a sigh of relief. It was comforting to learn that even the highest paid and most talented writers struggle to make elegant first drafts. It is liberating in a way to be able to write a first draft without rules and limitations. What I discovered most is that the importance of writing a "shitty" first draft lies within the need understand how to edit yourself when that is what it all comes down to. Shitty First Drafts was a very helpful read for me because it assured me that brilliance is born from shit and well-- we all produce it.

  1. I agree that reading this piece was encouraging for a non confident writer like myself, and the part about how writing a first draft without limitations is liberating! This was a very helpful read.

  2. I too think as I go and would struggle with what to write, but like you this reading reminded me that even the best of writers start off with their works flawed.

  3. The sentence "Very few writers really know what they are doing until they have done it," also stood out to me when I was reading this piece. It made me feel less insecure about my writing actually. I agree that this piece was very encouraging to a non confident writer.

  4. I was able to relate to your response when it comes to the whole "thinking as I go" and not having a clear direction of where my writing is going when I start. I also agree when you bring up the fact that writing a first draft is liberating.

  5. I can relate with the ides where you say you are the last person to have a clear idea of the direction you are taking with your writing because I am the same way when I start writing for anything

Action Plan

For my action plan I will add more pictures to my website and continue to expand on my topic. I also plan to make posters to place around campus to reach outside audiences and use that as my nondigital source. I will continue to work over the weekend to finish the project and best carry out my message on my website.

1) In project two I first did a lot of research to gather ideas and topics that I wanted to include in my essay. Then I went through and proofed it while adding citations and formatting everything. I did ended up doing three drafts rather than two. Project one was a little easier to write in my opinion because it was based off of our observations rather than facts and statistics. 2) I liked taking my first draft and transforming it into a final draft. This is where I organized all my thoughts and made the paper flow nicely. Once I have all my ideas out on the paper I can easily reorganize, cut and add new things. 3) I enjoyed project one more. I think it was lighter in the sense that it was more fun to write about. I liked exploring the different kinds of social adaptions in the films while also comparing time eras.
Jamica Williams What are some subversion examples the author mentions? A few books the the author mentions It's just a plant, Heather has two Mommies, and Gloria Goes Gay Can you think of other 2 books or movies that are subversion? Scary movie 1 and 2 Why are they subversion? Scary movie is subversive because it takes into account the the rhetorical factors in most scary movies and joke on them. Its more of a comedy than a "scary" movie. Each of the characters do exactly whats expected. They run the opposite way like up the stairs, trip and fall multiple times, and even live with the ghost that is haunting them. What do you think "GO THE FUCK TO SLEEP?" Who should be the target audience for this book? The audience of this book is any adult/parent. Because its probably R-Rated its targeted to older people, and anyone can find this humorous.
