Chapter 1 Summary

Genres

For many reasons genres are an important factor to consider when writing. Genres give people the opportunity to categorize various kinds of text, music, movies, or any composition. They also give a writer a general plan of what they want their outcome to be about.
A writer must be able to tell their story in a way that is appealing to their target audience. Rhetorical Appeals: Three common ways to persuade is ethos, pathos, and logos. Pathos can be the quickest way to persuade an audience. Pathos is an appeal to feelings and emotions. Logos persuades an audience by using facts and logic. Ethos, the last of the three, persuades people with the use of status. For example, knowing someones education status can make them a certain 'level of believable'. Getting someone to agree with an idea or stance, selling, or just informing can change the genre of a composition.
The elements of a genre are style, design, and sources. The style of a genre refers to the techniques used to communicate with the audience. A writer can be serious when speaking about a death rate over smoking to encourage people to quit or they can be overly excited to tell people about how much weight they lost and how. Design, refers to the physical picture or setup of a composition. Did they show pictures of the families who lost a loved one to smoking. Sources, the works we refer to to get real information. What makes this text or song believable.

Action Plan

For my action plan I will add more pictures to my website and continue to expand on my topic. I also plan to make posters to place around campus to reach outside audiences and use that as my nondigital source. I will continue to work over the weekend to finish the project and best carry out my message on my website.

1) In project two I first did a lot of research to gather ideas and topics that I wanted to include in my essay. Then I went through and proofed it while adding citations and formatting everything. I did ended up doing three drafts rather than two. Project one was a little easier to write in my opinion because it was based off of our observations rather than facts and statistics. 2) I liked taking my first draft and transforming it into a final draft. This is where I organized all my thoughts and made the paper flow nicely. Once I have all my ideas out on the paper I can easily reorganize, cut and add new things. 3) I enjoyed project one more. I think it was lighter in the sense that it was more fun to write about. I liked exploring the different kinds of social adaptions in the films while also comparing time eras.
Jamica Williams What are some subversion examples the author mentions? A few books the the author mentions It's just a plant, Heather has two Mommies, and Gloria Goes Gay Can you think of other 2 books or movies that are subversion? Scary movie 1 and 2 Why are they subversion? Scary movie is subversive because it takes into account the the rhetorical factors in most scary movies and joke on them. Its more of a comedy than a "scary" movie. Each of the characters do exactly whats expected. They run the opposite way like up the stairs, trip and fall multiple times, and even live with the ghost that is haunting them. What do you think "GO THE FUCK TO SLEEP?" Who should be the target audience for this book? The audience of this book is any adult/parent. Because its probably R-Rated its targeted to older people, and anyone can find this humorous.
