After reading "Exploring Topics & Creating a Research Proposal" from the Bedford Book of Genres, I have a clear understanding of how to efficiently compose a detailed research question, along with supporting questions, and subtopics. Prior to reading this chapter, I had a good idea of how to write a research question, and the essay that comes along with it. However, this reading really narrowed each step down to successfully create a designed and carefully articulated research question. I felt that the part about talking to people about your ideas was very helpful and relatable. Once I had an assignment to write a screenplay and my mind was not flowing as per usual causing me to be fresh out of ideas. Once I got in the car with my dad, we just started talking about everyday things and how I could make a comedic event out of it. Eventually, it lead me to write a comedic road rage screenplay. I also found that in the case of research questions, it is very important that your question be open-ended. If there is a yes or no answer, then there is not much to say if there is a correct answer. Questions that can be argued from both sides will create the most meaningful and interesting research papers, ones that you enjoy writing, and ones that others will enjoy reading.

  1. I also like how specific and step by step this reading was. It made the research process seem less intimidating and overwhelming than it did before. I knew how to write one, but I like the strategies that they suggested students implement.

  2. I agree that this chapter was very helpful and informative by going through each step in writing a research paper. I believe as well that the most interesting research papers are the ones that have multiple arguments. The more I am interested in a topic, the more success it will have.

  3. I thought the book was really helpful too by showing a step by step example on picking a topic.

  4. I agree with what you said about how choosing topics that can be expanded upon are favored while writing a research paper and can bring about more discussion. I also enjoyed your personal example!

  5. I agree, this article gives great ideas on settling on a topic to write about. When coming up with a topic its best to come up with an argument rather than a topic that has a simple yes, no answer. This will give a writer much more to talk about and it will be more interesting to read about.

The Bedford Book of Genres

Throughout chapter 1 of “The Bedford Book of Genres,” I learned that there are a variety of ways to improve one’s writing. Several writers tend to get carried away while writing that they forget who their audience is and what message they are trying to deliver. This is when one must ask themselves what their purpose of writing is, do they want to present a narrative/ tell a story, inform, or persuade. After figuring out ones purpose they must choose a genre to be able to shorten their idea and be concise. In order for this to occur one must know the basic qualities and agreed-upon rules about the genre they are composing. Once one makes those decisions they move on to the rhetorical situation which mainly explains the idea. This allows the writer to provide support on their purpose such as saying what is great about it or provide statistics, which will automatically make their writing more interesting for the audience to read, as well as, get t...

Action Plan

For my action plan I will add more pictures to my website and continue to expand on my topic. I also plan to make posters to place around campus to reach outside audiences and use that as my nondigital source. I will continue to work over the weekend to finish the project and best carry out my message on my website.

1) In project two I first did a lot of research to gather ideas and topics that I wanted to include in my essay. Then I went through and proofed it while adding citations and formatting everything. I did ended up doing three drafts rather than two. Project one was a little easier to write in my opinion because it was based off of our observations rather than facts and statistics. 2) I liked taking my first draft and transforming it into a final draft. This is where I organized all my thoughts and made the paper flow nicely. Once I have all my ideas out on the paper I can easily reorganize, cut and add new things. 3) I enjoyed project one more. I think it was lighter in the sense that it was more fun to write about. I liked exploring the different kinds of social adaptions in the films while also comparing time eras.
