Annie Whiddon Navigating Genres

Navigating Genres by Kery Dirk was incredibly informative on how to be rhetorically effective when writing in terms of genre. Genre has evolved into a more complex concept, and the reading helped in the simplification of understanding it. Kirk proposes that ideally we should use rhetoric appropriate to our genre in our writing in order to produce the best desired outcome for ourselves. Additionally, other measures to ensure rhetorical effectiveness are asking what we are trying to accomplish, determining purpose, audience, and location, and looking at similar examples within the same genre. I like the fact that genre, specifically form, provides a type of outline for our writing, and depending on location, we have a basic understanding of how our writing should look. Like Dirk describes, genre is a tool. By being rhetorically aware about genre, we open ourselves up to endless possibilities in writing, which is why genre is constantly being altered and added to. Lastly, I found it helpful to read Dirk's personal experience of rhetoric and genre when writing to her bank. It was a perfect example of considering purpose, audience, and location, and using examples in the same genre to conduct her own writing sample. The fact that she was successful in getting refunded shows the power of rhetoric and the importance of awareness in genre. This reading was very practical in the explanation of genre and how rhetorical awareness produces the desired outcome of our writing, and I will use her tips when constructing my first paper.

  1. I agree that when we are writing to a specific audience, we should always know the purpose of our writing in order to achieve our desired goal. I was also impressed how she handled her issues with her bank which she would not be able to do had she not understood the importance of genre awareness.

  2. I also like the fact that genre can be used as a tool. This helps us with an outline for the writing; it is also important to realize how powerful and persuasive rhetoric is.

Action Plan

For my action plan I will add more pictures to my website and continue to expand on my topic. I also plan to make posters to place around campus to reach outside audiences and use that as my nondigital source. I will continue to work over the weekend to finish the project and best carry out my message on my website.

1) In project two I first did a lot of research to gather ideas and topics that I wanted to include in my essay. Then I went through and proofed it while adding citations and formatting everything. I did ended up doing three drafts rather than two. Project one was a little easier to write in my opinion because it was based off of our observations rather than facts and statistics. 2) I liked taking my first draft and transforming it into a final draft. This is where I organized all my thoughts and made the paper flow nicely. Once I have all my ideas out on the paper I can easily reorganize, cut and add new things. 3) I enjoyed project one more. I think it was lighter in the sense that it was more fun to write about. I liked exploring the different kinds of social adaptions in the films while also comparing time eras.
Jamica Williams What are some subversion examples the author mentions? A few books the the author mentions It's just a plant, Heather has two Mommies, and Gloria Goes Gay Can you think of other 2 books or movies that are subversion? Scary movie 1 and 2 Why are they subversion? Scary movie is subversive because it takes into account the the rhetorical factors in most scary movies and joke on them. Its more of a comedy than a "scary" movie. Each of the characters do exactly whats expected. They run the opposite way like up the stairs, trip and fall multiple times, and even live with the ghost that is haunting them. What do you think "GO THE FUCK TO SLEEP?" Who should be the target audience for this book? The audience of this book is any adult/parent. Because its probably R-Rated its targeted to older people, and anyone can find this humorous.
