"Suicide Risk among Prisoners in French Guiana: Prevalence and Predictive
Factors." BMC Psychiatry, Vol 17, No. 1, 2017 DOI 10.1186/s12888-017-1320-4
Prisoners are highly at risk for suicidality, therefore the
evaluation of this prevalence and factors is important to understanding the
overall risk of imprisonment. To understand the risk factors Gülen Ayhan, et al. conducted
a study to examine the correlation between French Guianan inmates and the Mainland
French inmates and the risk factors and predictive factors. They
found that risk factors included depression, dysthymia, panic disorder, generalized
anxiety disorder, childhood abuse, and sexual assault. It was concluded that
French Guiana had slightly lower suicide risk than Mainland France due to differences
in social stigmatism of imprisonment. However, there was no significant
difference between the two nations, overall.
