After reading Kerry Dirk's 'Navigating Genres' essay, I liked how she started off the essay by using a specific genre. She used country music to introduce genres. I also like how she made her essay personal. She stated her personal experiences through things she learned through past professors, and her struggles when writing about new genres. I agree with the idea that genres develop when responding to different situations and experiences. I also like how she talks about how the definition of genre has slowly been changing. Dirk made me realize how much we encounter different genres on a daily basis. Through texting, social media, reading, and school, we go through lots of different genres. When we talk to our parents, versus when we talk to our friends, is two different genres. We talk differently to different people based on what reactions we are trying to get out of people. Dirk uses several other writers to show that genres are really just rhetorical actions. Writers will make titles based on what kind of audience they want to engage, to get the reactions they want. After reading and learning more about genres, I have come to the realization that any kind of tv show, movie, and piece of literature can be really hard to put into a specific genre. By understanding more about what a genre is, it can help make people better and write more fluently.
