This text really helped me understand genres in depth. Dirk is correct that it is hard to
identify some genres because two things under one genre can be vastly
different, and the identification of genres has gotten more difficult, however
her example about the thesis statement helped me understand the topic more. I
also enjoyed the example of the scenario with the ransom note, as it was quite humorous,
and it also helped explain what Dirk meant by genre formulas. She’s correct that when we have to write in a new genre that we have never written for before,
we always look for an example in order for us to have a “formula” to help us
write in this new genre. For example, I had to write a paper for my religion
class last semester, yet I had never written a religion paper before. So I went
online and read a few examples, which helped me think of a “formula” to write
my own religion paper. Overall, “Navigating Genres” really helped me understand
genres more in-depth which in turn will help me with my first paper.
I also loved Dirk's suggestion to look at similar works of the genre you are trying to produce. I think this shows you key features that are needed to truly produce the genre and when you incorporate these features readers can easily notice the genre.
