Kerry Dirk breaks down the struggles of writing about a topic that you do not know about. He also explains how in each genre, once it becomes well established, has its own set of unwritten rules and expectations. If these rules are broken, you are writing in unfamiliar territory, and therefore can become hard to follow and understand. The idea of "genre" is relatively new and is always increasing in size over time. Understanding the different genres and what makes up a specific genre can help in one's writing by being clear in their intentions and it helps to focus the work. Dirk makes his thoughts clear and breaks down how knowledge of genre can aid in student's writings and I hope to do the same in hopes to make my work clear and concise. Not only does knowledge about the genre help in the writing process, but it also helps for the author to communicate with the audience more effectively and therefore they may understand what is being said.
It is crazy to think that the concept of genres and its categories are ever growing and changing. Before reading any of these reading sections, I thought of genres as simple and pretty limited. However, there are so many genres and each of their purposes vary greatly.
ReplyDeleteI agree each genre has its own set of unwritten rules. This allows people to feel a little uneasy. But that's the fun part of the composition. The idea of a genre is new but it is continuously growing.
