"Genres help shape our everyday lives," a genre is categorizing a composition. In this article Kerry Dirks purpose was to expand the definition of a genre and to see how knowing the genre of a composition applies to our own writing. He speaks about how he wanted to go about writing to a composition student. He personally struggled with the old definition of a genre "Genre used to refer primarily to form,... simply a matter of filling in the blanks." Today, genres help shape our work.
There is a guideline almost every story line follows within a genre. But they are not required to follow by any means. Two compositions in the same genre can have completely different story lines. This is the same as going to different fast food stores and wanting nothing but fries. There are different factors that a company considers when making their signature fry combination. This is how a composition can fit into many different categories.
People can better accomplish goals by knowing what genres are used for. I like how Dirk say genres are important for us (students) because we begin to see how different choices we make create different reactions from audiences. A good writer will write to get the reaction desired.

I was specifically drawn to how good writers write to get to get the reaction desired. I think it is very important to cater to your audience so that you receive an intended response, rather than something that is completely different than the set goal.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your statement that says, " a good writer will write to get the reaction desired." I also think that once people know what genres are used for, they will begin to accomplish their goal in their writing, which is to receive a reaction from their reading audience.
