The first interesting thing that Kerry Dirk did when writing her essay, Navigating Genres, was make the reader feel very comfortable by writing in a casual way and including her personal life as references and examples, as opposed to a typical textbook sort of fashion. Additionally, she told about her struggles as a writer and made her essay very relatable which also eases tension off of any reader who shares similar problems. Dirk is able to bring to attention all of the different kinds of genres there are in everyday life, and shines light on how the definition of genre has evolved and continues to evolve over time. She adds that "knowing what a genre is used for can help people to
accomplish goals", which explains to the reader the importance of knowledge in the subject. The tone of the essay, along with the writing style and the numerous real-life examples and references, Dirk is able to really teach and explain the word "genre" instead of merely telling information.
I also liked how she included personal examples to make the piece more relatable. You can really tell she is skilled in writing to specific audiences in specific situations. Hearing about a professional writer's struggles and obstacles definitely eases the readers mind and makes us feel better about our own difficulties with writing.
